    About the CAT Exam

CAT is the entrance test for the IIMs and most leading Indian business schools. It has three sections — Verbal Ability & Reading Comprehension, Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning, and Quantitative Aptitude — each individually timed, with results reported as sectional and overall percentiles rather than raw marks.

Percentile scoring changes everything about preparation: you are ranked against the other candidates, so relative performance and section balance matter more than absolute score. Most schools apply sectional percentile minimums, which means one weak section can undo a strong overall performance. MockPrep CAT mocks use the +3 / −1 marking, cover all three areas, and return percentile-based analysis so you can see where you stand rather than only what you scored.

CAT Exam Pattern and Marking Scheme

CAT is scored on percentiles, so improving your weakest section usually raises your overall percentile more than improving your strongest one.

VARCReading comprehension plus verbal reasoning+3 / −1RC dominates the section
DILRSet-based data interpretation and logical reasoning+3 / −1Set selection is the entire skill

    CAT Syllabus Breakdown

What each subject covers, and where to focus your hours first

    Verbal Ability & Reading Comprehension

    • Reading comprehension across abstract, business and humanities passages
    • Para jumbles
    • Para summary
    • Odd sentence out
    • Inference and tone questions

Where to focus: RC is the majority of the section. Daily long-form reading in unfamiliar subjects is the only durable way to improve it.

    Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning

    • Tables and charts
    • Caselets
    • Arrangements and matching
    • Games and tournaments
    • Venn diagrams
    • Network and routing sets

Where to focus: The single highest-leverage skill in CAT is choosing which two or three sets to solve. Practise scanning and rejecting, not just solving.

    Quantitative Aptitude

    • Arithmetic (percentages, ratios, time-speed-distance, work)
    • Algebra and functions
    • Number systems
    • Geometry and mensuration
    • Modern maths (P&C, probability)

Where to focus: Arithmetic is the largest and most reliable block. Geometry rewards a memorised set of standard results.

How to Use Mock Tests to Improve Your CAT Score

Treat every mock like the real thing

Sit for the full test in one uninterrupted block, with a clock running and no notes open. A mock taken in pieces tells you what you know; a mock taken under exam conditions tells you what you can actually produce on exam day, which is the only number that matters.

    Solve DILR by selection

Spend the first two or three minutes reading every set before solving anything. Candidates who start with the first set they see routinely lose the section to a single unsolvable puzzle.

    Chase percentile balance

Because business schools apply sectional minimums, the marginal value of a point in your weakest section is higher than in your strongest. Let the sectional breakdown decide your study plan.

    Read outside your comfort zone

RC passages are drawn from philosophy, economics, science and the arts. Reading one difficult long-form article a day is slow-acting but the most reliable VARC improvement there is.

Review mocks by decision, not by answer

For every mock, ask which sets you should have skipped and which you should have attempted. Fixing selection decisions moves percentiles faster than learning new formulas.

CAT Score to Rank: Indicative Bands

These bands come from the same percentile model the app uses after every test. They are estimates for tracking improvement, not official cut-offs.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Are CAT mock tests aligned with IIM pattern?

    +

Yes, our CAT mock tests follow the official exam pattern covering QA, VARC, and DILR sections with the correct marking scheme.

Can I get percentile prediction for CAT?

    +

Yes, we provide percentile-based rank prediction to help you gauge your CAT preparation level.

How many CAT mock tests can I take?

    +

Unlimited. Each session generates unique questions for fresh practice every time.

How many CAT mocks should I take?

    +

Serious candidates typically take a mock or two every week for several months, with a detailed review after each. The review is what raises percentiles; the mock itself only produces the data.

Which CAT section should I prioritise?

    +

Your weakest one, because sectional percentile minimums make a poor section far more damaging than a merely good section is helpful.

How do I improve at DILR?

    +

By practising selection. Give yourself a fixed window to read all sets and pick the solvable ones, then solve only those. Most DILR improvement comes from better choices rather than faster arithmetic.

Is there negative marking in CAT?

    +

MCQs carry a penalty for wrong answers, which our tests replicate with +3 / −1. Non-MCQ questions in the real exam do not carry a penalty.

    Do you provide percentile-based feedback?

    +

Yes. Results are expressed as a percentile band alongside your raw score, which is closer to how CAT is actually reported.

Can I take unlimited CAT mocks?

    +

Yes, and each test generates a fresh question set.
