    About the GATE Exam

GATE tests engineering fundamentals for M.Tech admission, PSU recruitment and research fellowships. Every paper combines General Aptitude, Engineering Mathematics and a core branch subject, and the score is normalised into a GATE score used by institutes and public sector employers alike.

GATE rewards depth over coverage: a candidate who owns eight core subjects thoroughly usually outperforms one who has skimmed fifteen. Timed mock tests are how you find out which of your subjects are genuinely owned. MockPrep GATE mocks are branch-specific across CSE, Mechanical, Electrical, Civil and ECE, apply the +2 / −0.66 marking, and return subject-wise accuracy with a score and rank estimate.

GATE Exam Pattern and Marking Scheme

General Aptitude and Engineering Mathematics together form a large, branch-independent block that many candidates under-prepare because it feels peripheral. It is not.

    GATE Syllabus Breakdown

What each subject covers, and where to focus your hours first

    General Aptitude

    • Verbal ability
    • Numerical computation and estimation
    • Data interpretation
    • Logical reasoning

Where to focus: The highest marks-per-hour section in the entire paper. Never leave it to the last week.

    Engineering Mathematics

    • Linear Algebra
    • Calculus
    • Differential Equations
    • Probability and Statistics
    • Numerical Methods
    • Complex Variables (branch dependent)

Where to focus: Common across branches and highly predictable in style. It is the safest place to build a reliable base score.

    Computer Science (CSE)

    • Data Structures and Algorithms
    • Operating Systems
    • DBMS
    • Computer Networks
    • Theory of Computation
    • Compiler Design
    • Digital Logic
    • Computer Organisation

Where to focus: Algorithms, OS and DBMS repeatedly carry the largest weight. Theory of Computation is compact and highly scoring.

    Mechanical (ME)

    • Engineering Mechanics
    • Strength of Materials
    • Theory of Machines
    • Thermodynamics
    • Fluid Mechanics
    • Heat Transfer
    • Manufacturing Processes
    • Industrial Engineering

Where to focus: Thermodynamics and Fluid Mechanics are heavyweight. Manufacturing is broad but formula-driven and reliable.

    Electrical (EE)

    • Network Theory
    • Signals and Systems
    • Control Systems
    • Electrical Machines
    • Power Systems
    • Power Electronics
    • Analog and Digital Electronics
    • Measurements

Where to focus: Network Theory and Control Systems are consistent scorers and worth early mastery.

    Civil (CE)

    • Structural Analysis
    • Strength of Materials
    • RCC and Steel Design
    • Geotechnical Engineering
    • Fluid Mechanics and Hydraulics
    • Transportation Engineering
    • Environmental Engineering
    • Surveying

Where to focus: Geotechnical and Structural Analysis carry heavy weight. Environmental and Surveying are smaller but easy marks.

    Electronics & Communication (ECE)

    • Networks
    • Signals and Systems
    • Analog and Digital Circuits
    • Control Systems
    • Communications
    • Electromagnetics
    • Electronic Devices

Where to focus: Signals and Systems plus Networks form the backbone. Electromagnetics is heavy relative to its weight — prioritise accordingly.

How to Use Mock Tests to Improve Your GATE Score

Treat every mock like the real thing

Sit for the full test in one uninterrupted block, with a clock running and no notes open. A mock taken in pieces tells you what you know; a mock taken under exam conditions tells you what you can actually produce on exam day, which is the only number that matters.

    Own fewer subjects, completely

Pick your high-weight core subjects and take them to the point where you can solve any standard question mechanically. Partial familiarity across everything produces partial marks across everything.

    Bank Aptitude and Maths first

These are branch-independent, predictable, and disproportionately cheap in marks per hour of study. Secure them early so your core-subject revision is not competing with them in the final weeks.

Use numerical answer questions to your advantage

In the actual exam these carry no negative marking, so every one should be attempted. Practise estimating quickly rather than leaving them blank.

    Rebuild from the error log

GATE questions are conceptually deep, so the same misunderstanding recurs across topics. Classify each error by concept in review, and you will often fix several future questions at once.

GATE Score to Rank: Indicative Bands

These bands come from the same percentile model the app uses after every test. They are estimates for tracking improvement, not official cut-offs.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    Which GATE branches are available?

    +

We offer mock tests for CSE, Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, and Electronics & Communication Engineering.

Does GATE mock test include General Aptitude?

    +

Yes, each GATE mock test includes Engineering Mathematics, Core Subject questions, and General Aptitude.

    How is GATE score predicted?

    +

We use percentile-based estimation with the actual GATE candidate pool to predict your score and rank range.

    Which GATE branches are supported?

    +

Computer Science, Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, and Electronics & Communication Engineering, each with branch-specific questions alongside Engineering Mathematics and General Aptitude.

Is General Aptitude worth serious preparation?

    +

Yes. It is a substantial, branch-independent block and by far the highest marks-per-hour part of the paper, yet it is the section candidates most often postpone.

How many subjects should I prepare for GATE?

    +

Depth beats breadth. Master the high-weight core subjects for your branch plus Engineering Mathematics and General Aptitude, rather than skimming everything in the syllabus.

Do numerical answer type questions have negative marking?

    +

Not in the actual GATE exam, which is why every one of them should be attempted. Our mocks apply the +2 / −0.66 scheme to objective questions.

How is the GATE score estimated?

    +

Your score percentage is mapped to a percentile against the branch candidate pool and converted into an indicative score and rank band, useful for tracking improvement over time.

Can I take branch-specific tests only?

    +

Yes. You select your branch before starting, and questions are generated for that branch.
