    About the NDA Exam

The NDA entrance examination, conducted by UPSC, selects candidates for the National Defence Academy and Naval Academy. The written test has two papers: Mathematics, and the General Ability Test which combines English with a wide General Knowledge section spanning physics, chemistry, general science, history, geography and current events.

Mathematics carries substantial weight and is the section where a well-drilled candidate builds a decisive lead, while General Ability is broad enough that no one covers it entirely. MockPrep NDA mocks apply the official +2.5 / −0.83 marking, cover both papers, and give a subject-wise accuracy breakdown with an indicative rank band.

NDA Exam Pattern and Marking Scheme

A third of a mark lost for every wrong answer means disciplined elimination matters as much as subject knowledge in NDA.

    NDA Syllabus Breakdown

What each subject covers, and where to focus your hours first

    Mathematics

    • Algebra and sets
    • Matrices and determinants
    • Trigonometry
    • Analytical geometry (2D and 3D)
    • Differential calculus
    • Integral calculus and differential equations
    • Vector algebra
    • Statistics and probability

Where to focus: Trigonometry, calculus and analytical geometry recur heavily. This paper rewards mechanical fluency — drill until standard problems need no thinking.

    English

    • Grammar and usage
    • Vocabulary
    • Synonyms and antonyms
    • Ordering of words and sentences
    • Comprehension

Where to focus: Grammar and vocabulary questions are predictable and reliable. Secure them before spending time on comprehension.

    General Knowledge

    • Physics
    • Chemistry
    • General Science
    • History and freedom movement
    • Geography
    • Current events

Where to focus: Physics and Chemistry carry meaningful weight within GK and are more predictable than current events. Prioritise them.

How to Use Mock Tests to Improve Your NDA Score

Treat every mock like the real thing

Sit for the full test in one uninterrupted block, with a clock running and no notes open. A mock taken in pieces tells you what you know; a mock taken under exam conditions tells you what you can actually produce on exam day, which is the only number that matters.

    Make Mathematics your lead

It is the largest single block of predictable marks in the exam and responds directly to practice volume. Consistent daily maths practice is the most reliable route to a strong NDA score.

    Prioritise science within General Knowledge

The physics and chemistry portions of GK are syllabus-bound and therefore preparable, unlike open-ended current affairs. Cover them first.

    Control your attempts

At −0.83 per wrong answer, undisciplined guessing does real damage. Set a personal rule: attempt only after eliminating two options, and check your accuracy after every mock.

Prepare in parallel with the SSB

Written selection is only the first stage. Building general awareness and communication habits now makes the interview stage substantially easier later.

NDA Score to Rank: Indicative Bands

These bands come from the same percentile model the app uses after every test. They are estimates for tracking improvement, not official cut-offs.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Does the NDA mock test cover both papers?

    +

Yes, our NDA mock tests cover both Mathematics and General Ability sections in line with the official UPSC NDA exam pattern.

    Can I take a Mathematics-only NDA test?

    +

Yes, you can choose subject-wise practice and focus only on Mathematics or General Ability.

How accurate is NDA rank prediction?

    +

We use percentile-based estimation with a defence aspirant pool to provide a realistic rank range based on your performance.

What is the NDA exam pattern?

    +

Two papers — Mathematics, and the General Ability Test covering English and General Knowledge — both objective, with +2.5 for correct answers and −0.83 for incorrect ones. Our mocks follow this scheme.

Which NDA subject should I focus on?

    +

Mathematics, because it is the largest predictable block of marks and improves most directly with practice. General Ability should be maintained continuously alongside it.

    What level is NDA Mathematics?

    +

Class 11 and 12 level, covering algebra, trigonometry, calculus, analytical geometry, vectors and statistics.

How much current affairs is needed?

    +

Current events appear within General Knowledge, but the physics, chemistry and general science portions are more predictable and deserve priority when time is limited.

    Can I take a Mathematics-only NDA test?

    +

Yes. You can choose subject-wise practice and focus on Mathematics or General Ability alone.

Do the mocks help with SSB preparation?

    +

Indirectly. The written practice builds the general awareness and reasoning habits that also serve you well in the interview stage, though the SSB itself assesses personality and officer-like qualities separately.
